When the first settlers in Southeast Ohio landed at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers in April, 1788, the area was an undeveloped wilderness. Those who made this first journey into the unknown embodied a pioneer spirit that is still apparent in the region today. The people of Appalachian Ohio are still willing to take risks, operate outside their comfort zone, and approach challenges in new and innovative ways. The promise those first settlers saw when they reached the Northwest Territory is still untapped in many ways. Modern pioneers in industry, education, and healthcare are currently laying a foundation for what is certain to be explosive growth in the region in the next 25 years.
